We usually know next to nothing about the previous histories of the animals we buy at the annual auctions. They have nothing more to expect from life and look sadly towards their uncertain fate. But there was certainly a day when they were useful to someone or made children's eyes light up - until their owners turned their backs on them. And if no one can be found to take in the animal that has become a nuisance, the only option is usually to sell it to a dealer. This is how we became aware of Jane the mule at a horse auction. She is very spirited and gets her way. That would have been her death sentence if we hadn't rescued her.
