Chicken Kaan
Lakenfelder
Lakenfelder chickens are a German breed that has existed as a distinct variety for over 150 years. They were first introduced under the breed name "Jerusalem chickens" in 1854. Hens typically begin laying eggs around their sixth month of life. These chickens are known for their lively and cheerful nature. They are relatively easy to tame, though that doesn’t stop them from occasionally causing trouble for their owners, as being confined is simply not suited to these active birds. Lakenfelders make it clear to their keepers that confinement in small spaces is not welcome. They are excellent foragers and will seize any opportunity to escape the run in search of food in the garden. To house them properly, you need not only a spacious enclosure, but one that is also covered at the top. Lakenfelder hens are excellent brooders. They are capable of hatching and raising chicks on their own. One drawback is their slow growth: chicks reach only half of their adult weight after three months. Another challenge lies in breeding purebred birds. This is not due to survival issues but rather due to the difficulty of achieving the correct color pattern as defined by the breed standard.
