Police horses, officers on four hooves, form a well-rehearsed team with their riders for many years. They have to be able to rely on each other and keep a cool head even in dangerous or stressful situations. Although Rubinio was actually in his prime at the age of 10, he was already considered a "pensioner". The Oldenburg gelding was suffering from a chronic respiratory disease, which meant he could no longer be used in the police service. In the past, being unfit for duty was usually a death sentence.
