Our chimpanzees
Why are there chimpanzees at Gut Aiderbichl?
In the 1970s and 1980s, chimpanzees were in great demand for animal experiments due to their genetic similarity to humans. They were infected with diseases such as HIV and hepatitis for research purposes. In the laboratory, the apes lived in complete isolation, with no contact with the outside world or natural environmental influences. Many of them died in agony.
When the animal experiments were stopped in 1997, they were finally saved. The pharmaceutical company then financed a monkey facility in the Gänserndorf safari park. However, when the safari park went bankrupt, it was uncertain how the care of the traumatised chimpanzees would continue.
In 2009, Gut Aiderbichl provided the hoped-for help, and Gut Aiderbichl Gänserndorf was born. Our work centres on overcoming trauma and returning the chimpanzees to a normal life. In Gänserndorf, the chimpanzees can now age with dignity.
