Our horses
Why are there horses at Gut Aiderbichl?
The care requirements and costs for animals increase with their size, age and needs, which is why many owners reach their limits and bring their animals to us. More than 600 horses currently live at Gut Aiderbichl, including former breeding stallions, circus horses, police horses and Lipizzaners, who enjoy their retirement here. Many of them have been living with us for more than 15 years. Horses that came to us through neglect or were rescued from the horse market also find refuge here. We regularly rescue foals in particular that are threatened by the slaughterhouse.
Some animals also come through the Animal Provision Programme, where responsible owners ensure that their animals are well cared for after their death. Our animal paradise offers these horses a home where they can grow old without performance or benefit. With modern horse husbandry and continuous research, in co-operation with the Sandgrueb Foundation, the Vet. Med. University of Vienna and the Vetsuisse Faculty in Zurich, we are constantly improving the living conditions of older and sick horses and ensuring that they want for nothing.
