Our raccoons
Why are there raccoons at Gut Aiderbichl?
Most raccoons that find their way to us have lost family members such as siblings or parents to hunters – because the raccoon is considered an ‘invasive species’ and is not welcome in the forests of Europe. But they are not to blame.
The raccoon is originally native to North America and probably found its way to Austria and neighbouring countries through fur farms. However, its high reproduction rate and adaptability make it a serious problem: it displaces native species and jeopardises the ecological balance. At Gut Aiderbichl, we offer these sometimes unloved animals a safe home.
