Farewell to Roy

Obituary on a species threatened with extinction

Gut Aiderbichl has been committed to the protection of species since its foundation, and so we were able to take in five Kune - Kune pigs about five years ago.
At the end of the 70s, this special New Zealand pig breed was threatened with extinction. A breeding programme preserved this wonderful species for mankind. At that time, they even went so far as to breed them not only in New Zealand, but also in the USA, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Austria. The reason for spreading them to other continents was an interesting one: In the event of an epidemic on one continent, the particular pig species would in any case continue to exist on the other continents.

"Entry of the Maori" at
Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf

The Kune - Kune are smaller than the domestic pigs we know. They have short legs and a special trademark: two "tassels" (in Maori: Piri Piri) grow on their chin.
Harry, Potter, Roy, Diego and Casanova moved in with us in July 2015.
What fun it was when the little Kune - Kune pigs ran around the shop in the Great Hall, greeting the guests with their funny eyes and taking the stuffed animals from the sales shelves. From the very first day, the Kune - Kune crept into the hearts of the staff, even if their pranks were sometimes quite cheeky.

One who was especially loved went over the rainbow bridge on the 27th of October - Our Roy

If the human was perhaps a little sad, there was a Kune - Kune pig that could help immediately by his special character: Roy.
His smile was always very mischievous, as if he wanted to tell us something funny.

At the children's birthday parties, it was with the greatest enthusiasm that he did not want the prepared carrots and apples, but loved to undo the laces of the children's shoes. Roy's best friend was Diego - nothing and no one was safe from them. For a few days, Roy didn't really want to eat anymore and he spurned the best treats. He also didn't want to leave the enclosure. The signs were not good. The vet had deep wrinkles on his forehead and we knew we had to put Roy out of his misery.

What would be the last question to Roy, if he could still hear it?

"We hope you've been comfortable these past few years, haven't you?"

Memory is a window through which we can see you whenever we want to

Dear Roy,

you were never like the weather - you were always in a good mood and squealed the loudest when you recognised the green food bowls. Hardly any of your friends enjoyed cuddling with us as much as you did.

We hope you have a lush green meadow and shade where you are now, and that you can dig big holes in the ground with lots of friends.
We will miss you very much and never forget you.
