Farewell to Cattle Nikolaus

Cows have best friends among themselves and they want to be man's friends too.
The famous Bandit, the Dahoomey cattle, Elisa and all the cattle in the herd where Nikolaus had spent his years were crying. A soft, sad, plaintive "moo" purred through the air as he fell asleep.

The cattle trader became a lifesaver

In 2014, Nikolaus was standing with another 300 calves in the barn of a livestock trader. From there, the calves, which were only a few days old, were to be transported to various fattening farms.
However, little Nikolaus could hardly stand. He suffered from rickets and had shortened tendons in his front legs. A life as a fattening bull on slatted floors would have been impossible for him.

The cattle trader recognised the doomed living situation of the little bull, took heart and contacted Michael Aufhauser. Word must have got around to the trader at that time that we not only love and respect cattle, but can also save them from the butcher and guarantee them a good life in our animal welfare community.

This is how Nikolaus was taken in in December 2014 and he spent a few days among the animals in the living animal crib at Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf. He should be allowed to live, have fun and experience love and respect.

The vet recommended plenty of exercise, we trained his tendons and Nikolaus worked eagerly and with concentration. We succeeded in improving his living situation and Nikolaus lived for several years in the herd of our famous "Bandit", the bull from a tethered stall.

Pain became unbearable

At some point, Nikolaus' pain became stronger and he also refused to eat. There was no more solution to take away his pain.

The only final solution for his salvation made it easier for Nikolaus to cross the Rainbow Bridge. When cattle are separated from their herd or their familiar people, the animals mourn their loss. From the sounds of the cattle one could recognise grief and around their friend stood depressed cattle with sadly bowed heads.
Nikolaus had fallen asleep peacefully, surrounded by his cattle family and the keepers, who sadly crouched beside his body, crying and mourning for him.

No matter whether human or animal,
We will be known forever by the tracks we leave behind. (Dakota)

Dear Nikolaus

Dear Nikolaus,

Thank you for letting us get to know you and love you. With your illness, which you patiently endured, you crept into our hearts and took a firm place there. Not only your herd, but also we keepers will miss you.
