Obituary Teddy

A few months of love and care for Teddy

There is no loyalty that has not already been broken, except that of a truly loyal dog. – Konrad Lorenz

The male Golden Retriever Teddy was 11 years old and his female husky friend Sky was about 8 years old when they were abandoned by their owners in a kennel in Hungary. A teacher from Vienna and her friend discovered this abuse and contacted Gut Aiderbichl’s animal emergency centre.

Animal suffering within the borders of the EU

Michael Aufhauser, Dieter Ehrengruber and the entire Gut Aiderbichl team were and are careful not to judge and condemn. In the case of Teddy and Sky, you have to be very careful not to do just that. If the two ladies had not shown civil courage, what would have happened to the dogs left in the kennels? They were cared for in a makeshift way by the neighbours, but it was not a happy solution. Teddy and Sky spent their lives in the kennels in the garden until they enquired about Gut Aiderbichl. Whether it was hot or cold, without love and affection, without exercise.
Animal suffering in an EU country – no need to look to Asian countries and beyond.

Would an animal shelter have been the solution?

Hungarian animal shelters would allegedly have taken in Teddy and Sky, but the two would probably have been separated. Separation after a long life together would not have been a good solution for the dogs.
It would probably also have been difficult to place the 11-year-old Teddy, while Sky would have had a better chance of being adopted by a Hungarian family. Fate had other plans anyway.

Teddy's state of health was alarming

Sky and her old friend Teddy found their new forever home together at Gut Aiderbichl in Carinthia. Markus, the estate manager in Carinthia, realised that Teddy was very ill. Would he survive the winter? Plagued by terrible diarrhoea and a cough, Teddy first enjoyed the many cuddles, the warmth and the good food in his new home.
Teddy was able to enjoy his life for just under four months, but his diarrhoea really got to him. Too many years in the cold and living in adverse conditions had severely affected his intestines. The vet also diagnosed chronic gastrointestinal tract inflammation and Teddy was certainly in pain.
A complete intestinal blockage forced the vet to put our Teddy to sleep. Everything possible had been tried, but the abuses of the last few years in the kennel could not be rectified.

A short time of love and care for man’s best friend

A sad story about two dogs, one of whom, Teddy, was unable to enjoy his newfound freedom for more than a few weeks. The sheer horror of so much cruelty and indifference towards two dogs is hard to suppress and almost unbearable.

Sky is looking for her teddy bear, with whom she had lived in kennels for years. The animal carers in Carinthia are now making a special effort to bring her out of her sadness at losing her teddy.

Cruelty to animals must be spoken out loud

In the few weeks that we were allowed to experience Teddy, we were certain that he was loyal and devoted to humans.

Dear Teddy,
We were not allowed to be with you for long and were very sad and depressed when we learnt of your diagnosis. There was no going back to a healthy life, your body was sick and had absolutely no strength left.
We promise you that we will never stop telling you about the cruelty you had to endure. It hurts our souls when we try to feel what you went through as man’s most loyal friend.

Vtry to forgive people and don’t forget us. There is now one more star in the great firmament – his name is Teddy. Take care, dear friend.
