International Rabbit Day

24.9.2022

At Internationaln Day of the Rabbit we spoil our bunnies with special treats, with a lot of attention and even more caring love. Our rabbit house is regularly filled with rabbits and hares that are given away for various reasons: one of two rabbits has died and a second one is not to be acquired, children are in puberty and the rabbit has become secondary. Sometimes they are accompanied by statements like "If you don't pick them up, I'll make goulash out of them...".
We take in the animals and our loving small animal caretakers try to give them a species-appropriate, loving life.

"Rabbits, like all the other animals, are not children's toys and you should never give them away!" - Michael Aufhauser

Cats, dogs, guinea pigs or even rabbits are the favorites of children. Young people can not early enough experience and learn how to approach animals, how to stroke and caress them, and how to have respect for living creatures.
Giving animals to children is fun at first, because it makes them happy. Unfortunately it happens more and more often that the love fades away and so many hare or rabbit are brought in a box to Gut Aiderbichl.

What do animals feel when they are "surrendered"?

Whether it's a big horse or a small, fuzzy rabbit: when you watch them, you learn that animals not only have organs like a human being, but also carry a world of feelings within them: insecurity, fear, love, trust...animals feel all of this just like we humans do.
All the more it shocks me again and again that newborn rabbits, cats, puppies etc. are abandoned. What is going on in such people? Newborn rabbits usually have no chance to survive, if they are left in a cardboard box somewhere in the rain, snow or heat. They die alone. They starve, die of thirst, freeze to death in the cold or die of heat. This is what happened a year ago. In a cardboard box in front of the entrance of Gut Aiderbichl, there have been deposited five tiny black rabbits. Completely undercooled, the small long ears waited for a rescuing hand.
Our animal keepers weighed the bunnies and fed them every hour. A lamp warmed them, who snuggled together in the dense hay. They were given names like D'Artagnon, Aramis, Athos, Porthos and MyLady de Winter. Very often the little bunnies had to go to the vet and unfortunately two of them did not make the fight for survival.

In the experimental laboratory, the rabbit is not considered an animal, but only a skin and eye

Skin creams, mascara, etc. are tested on rabbits. More and more progress in the medicine and beauty industry also means more and more animal suffering in the testing laboratories.
In the experiments, they are taken out of the cages and strapped down. Then for example liquids are dripped into their eyes, and it is observed whether their conjunctivae turn red or whether the cornea is damaged by burns or not. - The rabbits are in agony. Because they do not produce tear fluid, they can not flush out the foreign bodies. Humans can then confidently use mascara and other cosmetics that are tested on rabbits.
Let's think for two minutes what is happening here. We don't know what goes on in experimental laboratories. Do we want to know?

Don't follow every fashion trend

It's getting cooler again and soon you'll find sweaters, jackets, hats, etc. with fur trim on the shelves. Behind every sold fur, hide terrible living conditions of all breeding animals, which sit their life for the profit of the fur industry in narrow cages.
Think of the rabbits, cats, dogs, foxes - feel the warmth of the animals when you stroke a rabbit. How it looks at us lovingly and is happy about our caresses.

I wish you that just by thinking about the animal, you will leave back the fur in the store and switch your personal traffic light to "RED"..

Sincerely, your Gisela.

"The lives of all living beings, be they human, animal or other, are precious, and all have the same right to be happy. They are a part of our world."
