Abandoned

Many pets are abandoned to their fate

For hours he already sat in the storage box, equipped with a muzzle and a water bowl, until finally someone became aware of his whining. It turned out: the white, male guard dog with the fluffy fur was abandoned by his owners and simply left to his fate in the box in front of the training grounds of a dog school.

Gut Aiderbichl is a contact point for abandoned animals

Unfortunately, this case is not uncommon. During the Corona pandemic, many people acquired a pet. Now that "normal everyday life" has returned and traveling is also possible again, many no longer have any use for the animal companion. "An animal always means a lot of care, support, but of course also a financial cost. Many people are not aware of this. Also the breed, and the associated needs of the animals must be absolutely taken into account," says Bianca Pöckl, animal rescuer of Gut Aiderbichl.

The animal shelters are also already overcrowded. Therefore, Gut Aiderbichl in Henndorf near Salzburg, case of seizures or abandoned animals, has also become a contact point for the city of Salzburg and other communities. "In this way, we are clearly fulfilling a public mission," says Managing Director and Chairman of the Foundation of Gut Aiderbichl, Dieter Ehrengruber.

Abandoning an animal is not a trivial offense

The dog is chipped, but not registered in an animal database. Thus, there is no possibility for the authorities and Gut Aiderbichl to find the rightful owner. Accordingly, the only option is to file charges against the unknown perpetrator. "To abandon an animal is not a peccadillo!" says Dieter Ehrengruber. According to the Animal Welfare Act in Austria, the owner or keeper thereby puts the animal in a dangerous situation that can endanger its well-being. Whether something actually happens to the animal is secondary before the law. In Austria, such an offense is punished by the authorities with a fine of up to 7,500 euros.
