"Surplus of men" in the henhouse
Bud Spencer and Terence Hill
The flock of roosters at Gut Aiderbichl is getting bigger and bigger. Sometimes a young rooster is given to a bridal couple and then it has to go, sometimes the rooster crows too loudly or is too aggressive and the rooster has to go.
Bud Spencer and Terence Hill lived together with many chickens and over the years the male flock grew. They wanted to reduce the number of cockerels and were considering slaughtering them. The two beautiful roosters were luckyand are now spending their twilight years in Henndorf. Neither Bud Spencer nor Terence Hill are aggressive, but both run away shyly when a person tries to approach them.
"... Presumably they are no longer suitable for consumption ..."
The surplus of cockerelshad to be reduced, and so two beautiful, one-year-old Old Styrian cockerels were almost slaughtered.
By nature, the rooster is the protector, provider of food and defender of his hens. Fighting for position with each other can sometimes be painful, but Bud Spencer and Terence Hill were and are not out to fight. They are two peaceful, young roosters who belong to a dying breed of domestic fowlnamely the Altsteirer. Old Styrians are beautiful chickens – are humans really making them extinct?
The cock has a greenish iridescent plumage on the body, the feathers on the neck are reddish brown. There is also a white colour of the Altsteirer, which is extremely endangered. The unique distinguishing feature of the Altsteirer chicken oroosteris the mop of feathers behind the comb.
The annoying crowing of the roosters
Often there are reports in the daily newspapers – – “The rooster always crows in the morning – people feel disturbed while sleeping – the rooster has to go, …”. The animal troublemakers often take the owner and immediate neighbours who feel disturbed to the lawyer or even to court.
By nature, a rooster crows as soon as the day awakens and he actually wants to call his hensin. And then, when the hens arrive, the day begins with cackling and croaking – a completely natural process.
The loud sounds of modern technology in discos, or of roaring engine noises, obviously bother people less than noises from the animal world.
At Gut Aiderbichl, the roosters sing along with the donkeys
Bud Spencer, Terence Hill, Franz Josef, Artjom, Felix, Toni, Jörg or Roadrunner – they are wonderful roosters and are not subject to any laws against noise pollution. At Gut Aiderbichl, the crowing, clucking, animal communication disturbed neither animals nor humans.
Among our taps there are also true artists, such as Artjom. Every time he is happy, he croons melodic arias to himself, and nobody minds. On the contrary, our special musical group of donkeys joins in with the crowing song of the cockerels with a loud “Iah”.
