Jule and Frieda
Two cattle from a burnt-down stable building
A few weeks ago, Jule and Frieda found a new forever home at Gut Aiderbichl’s Moosfeldhof farm.
Before our animal emergency centre received a desperate, sad Mailreached our animal emergency centre, in which a major fire in a German villagewas reportedthat had destroyed a huge stable.
Jule and Frieda could not stay in the pasture over the winter
Where to put the animals? It is a disaster for the farmer if the stable building is completely destroyed by fire.
It’s not just that a lot of work and money goes into the building. A stable is the home of the animals, and where should they go if everything is burnt down to the ground? Such destruction is a tragedy for both humans and animals. Animals often die in the burning barn and some survive: no farmer is indifferent to the suffering of animals, but destinies decide when they happen.
We were asked to find space for Jule and Frieda, and so we managed to accommodate them at Moosfeldhof.
How do animals experience fire?
First comes the smoke, which makes the cattle apathetic, the life-threatening fire spreads and the cattle start bellowing loudly. The farmer has his hands full trying to drivethe animals out of the barn. The situation is not an everyday one. Do you still have time to get the cattle out of the barn? Every cow reacts differently – just like humans do when panic and fear set in.
Stefan was a brand bull and will never be forgotten
Our ox Stefan was a young burnt bull when he came to Gut Aiderbichl in Henndorfover six years ago. His body was covered in burns. The destroyed areas of skin were treatedby the animal keepersfor months. Stefan grew up and the fur slowlycame back, but not on all parts of his body. The areas on his hips and backremained bare.
Stefan stayed in his stable or stood under his canopy on hot summer days. He was a clever, sensitive and grateful ox, and was able to lead a good lifefor a few years. Unfortunately, a very aggressiveskin cancerdevelopedand a few weeks agowe had tolet our big one cross the Rainbow Bridge. His candle of life had gone out, but Stefan remains in our memories.
Jule and Frieda were spared from the flames
Thank God Jule and Frieda were spared from the fire and didn’t have to suffer Stefan’s fate.
“Julchen and Frieda have meanwhile settled in very well and like and especially like our little Bond with the final number 007 on the ear tagvery much. The other cattle on my farm will help them forget what they have experienced. I think the two of them will definitely manage,” Christian Kögl, manager of the Moosfeldhof farm.
