Donkey Jakob
Looking for a new home at the age of 32
A touching email reached the animal emergency centre at Gut Aiderbichl:
(…) Donkeys have been part of our lives for 40 years … Now Jakob is alone and looking for a new home together with his own kind (…) – For many years, a couple had Elsa (deceased), Benje (deceased) and Suleiken (Jakob’s mother, sadly deceased) firmly integrated into their lives. The farm they lived in will probably also have to be replaced with a small dwelling.Aged in years themselves, the animal-loving people were looking for a home for their Jakob so that he would be well looked after and have companions of his own kind. That’s how Jakob the donkey came to Gut Aiderbichl in Deggendorf.
Love for donkeys is one of the most beautiful things a person can feel
donkeys have had a strong relationship with humans for thousands of years and love their company. They are very social animals, curious about other living beings and make contact on their own initiative.
Due to its intelligence, a donkey can build up a very intensive relationship with humans. It senses how humans are feeling, based on their facial expressions, gestures and physical condition, and reacts accordingly.
donkeys think a lot, consider and always weigh up situations first, before they decideto do something. This behaviour is misinterpreted by humans as stubbornness.
Donkeys tend to be calm, sensitive, playful, patient and quiet. They have a high irritability threshold and a low potential for aggression. Theydo not know gratuitous violence. Wif a donkey lashes out, then enough warnings have been sent beforehand.
Jakob now has many conspecifics
He likes to "eyeball" some of them
One that he likes to “eyeball” could be Tabea. The beautiful brown and black donkey is 15 years old and came to Gut Aiderbichl Deggendorf as a baby with her mother Maria, a Romanian working donkey, in 2008. Maria was 38 years old when she gave birth to her foal. She knew that her foal needed her, but she had no strength and no will to live. She was tired and worn out from pulling the wooden waterwheel. A cattle dealer bought them both free – so they came to Deggendorf, and life became easier, labour-free and happy. How nice would it be if Jakob fell in love with pretty Tabea? What are the chances? We’ll keep a close eye on it and report back.
