Edeltraud, her calf Enno and his friend Lauser
have survived
From the perspective of Gut Aiderbichl
(written by Gisela Pschenitschnig)
People who love animals wanted to save Edeltraud, a Fleckvieh-Angus-Cattle, from slaughter. Dieter Ehrengruberspontaneously agreed to take her in, not knowing that Edeltraud was carrying a secret. Also Lauser, a few months old bull calf, should have been sent to the slaughterhouse. However, things turned out differently, so the Angus cattle left for the new home of Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf.
Edeltraud, a beautiful Angus cow
The history of the ancestors of Edeltraud takes us to the 17th century. The first breeder of Angus cattle was the Scot Hugh Watson. The first herd book about Angus cattle is kept since 1892.
Angus Cattle concerns robust animals, which can be kept on the pasture all year round. A special feature is also the wide, slightly inclined pelvis. This allows them to easilyer give birth.
The Little Secret of Edeltraud
The first pregnancy was not to take place until she was two years old. Even without a vet, our keepers could tell that Edeltraud was carrying a calf in her belly. She was only 18 months old and too young for a pregnancy. The birth was very difficult, because the calf was too big. It was problematic for Edeltraud to push her calf out of her belly. What had happened? The father of the calf Enno is a Pinzgauer bull who is big and corpulent.
It was not the first time in the history of Gut Aiderbichl that a pregnant cow calved on one of our farms. If you now consider that Edeltraud was intended for slaughter, the right answer was found very quickly: the unborn Enno would have died together with the mother cow. It would not have been the first time that a pregnant cow had lost her life.
Edeltraud loves her two-month-old Enno more than anything
Despite the difficult birth, the different breed and the colour of the coat of a Pinzgau bull.,Edeltraud loves her Enno dearly. Neither of them had to experiencethe pain of separation after calving, because at Gut Aiderbichl there is mother-child husbandry. The milk that the cowproducesis solely for her Enno, who drinks with pleasure from his mother's udder. Both will never be separated, but will be able to live a common cattle life until the natural end of their lives.
Lauser is Enno's friend and playmate
Also, or just because Lauser is a year older, they are particularly thick "Angus friends".Lauser has had a leg deformity since birth. He cannot run too long distances because he chafes between his legs. A bull must be strong - Lauser is too, but he "goes" his own way.
Edeltraud provides her Enno and his friend Lauser with all her love and care. Lauser will probably also always need a friend to run with him at his speed. As if Edeltraud were telling her Enno how to treat his friend, young Enno treats Lauser like a real, great friend does: understandingly, respectfully and lovingly.
Gut Aiderbichl is the place where animals are allowed to be as nature wants them to be
A home for all and a home until the natural end of life. Respect and love are due to animals just as they are to humans. We can learn a lot from them: animals do not question their friend and partner, they accept them as they are.
I wish people, who can meet the cows, to observe them for a while. Their calm, big eyes tell many interesting stories about their lives.
Sincerely, your Gisela
