Ferret Emma

stayed behind alone...

Emma, a ferret about two years old with long, black fur, has lost her partner and is now alone in a cage. Emma is a very calm ferret, they were looking for a new place for her to live, but this didn’t seem to work out.The owners were unable to give Emma the attention she needed and asked to take her in. So she has now arrived here and is settling into her new family.

The animal with the robber's mask

When keeping ferrets, it is very important that they can spend their lives with at least one of their own kind. If they are kept alone, they become lonely.

Ferrets probably have a special attraction for many people. Domestication of the small, agile animals began over 2000 years ago in the Mediterranean region. Ferrets are descended from polecats and are hunters.
The scientific name is Mustela Putorius Furo.Translated, this means “stinking mouse thief”. It is most likely derived from the European polecat (Mustela putoris). The suffix “furo” is derived from fur, the Latin word for thief, and this in turn fits quite well with the robber mask that some ferrets wear on their faces.

You just have to like them. However: liking alone is not enough to make a ferret happy. They can live up to 9 years and require a lot of care, proper nutrition and well thought-out keeping conditions.

Emma's new family

Luzy, Sepp and their offspring Herkules

Luzy and Sepp were discovered on the internet. The two sociable animals have a son together – Hercules. The ferret family lived with animal-loving people for a while, but they split up and were looking for a new home for the two ferrets.

Luzy, Sepp and cheeky Hercules live in the outdoor enclosure because that’s what they were used to. Emma was “socialised” with them – an attempt that was a success. Emma and Hercules are the same age and get on really well. Emma is allowed to cuddle with Luzy, Sepp and Herkules, there are no problems with food, and every now and then she takes a sand bath together with Herkules. It’s a happy ending for Emma, because she couldn’t have had a better time.

Emma no longer shows any signs of sadness, she is eating well and sprinting around the enclosure with cheeky Hercules. All the best, dear Emma…
