Found dog Sheko
Why chipped dogs must also be registered
Sheko came as found dog to Gut Aiderbichl in Henndorf. A policeman waswatchinglittle Shih at Salzburg’s main railway station. Tzu has become attentive. He stood there with matted fur, without a lead, smelling of cigarette smoke and perfume, so thin that you could feel his spine: Sheko – chipped – but not registered.
We picked up Sheko, who will be three years old this June, from the fire station. Our animal keepers first provided Shekowith food and lots of cuddles.
Sheko has a heart like a lion
In general, the Shih Tzuhas a strong sense of self. Perhaps this dog breedwas also thereforeas a guard dog at Buddhist templesin use? At the same time, his nature is endearing, cheerful and also playful and intelligent.
Sheko was very charming, and had the animal keepers wrapped in a flasharound his little paws. Hisfur was groomed and one thing was especiallyimportant: Sheko wisheda full bowl of food.
Chipping and registering dogs
Since 2010, the Austrian Animal Protection Act acc. §24a,that it is mandatoryto, his dog (from the 3rd month. The dog must be chip-taggedand registeredin the pet databaseat least before it is passed onfor the first time. Escaped, abandoned, or stolen dogs can be easily identified and registeredusing a readerthanks to the chip and thus can be returnedto the owner.
The microchip is a data carrier the size of a grain of rice
As with an injection, the vet inserts the microchip under the skin on the left side of the dog’s neck using a cannula. It should remain in place in the tissue. The chip is a tiny implant on which a 15-digit identification number is stored.
The subsequent registration in the pet database can be done online in person using the citizen card or via the vet. The registered data contains personal and animal-related information. An inserted chip without registration is useless because the owner cannot be easily traced without registration.
Dog owners who do not register their dog in the pet database are committing an administrative offence and are liable to a fine of € 3.750.00 or € 7,500.00 in the event of a repeat offence.
Sheko’s master has picked up his little friend again – freshly groomed, bathed and fed. We wish our little friend all the very best for his future.
