Fox puppies Fee and Bresl
Things have been hotting up in the foxhole recently. Because we have a new addition. Two fox cubs have moved into Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf: Fee and Bresl. And with them two moving fates.
How do foxes come to Gut Aiderbichl?
Over and over again, visitors ask us: How do foxes get to Gut Aiderbichl? Don’t wild animals actually belong in the forest? Yes, of course they do. Foxes are wild animals and their place would be in the wild. But it is not always possible to return them to the wild. If fox cubs come into contact with humans too early, they lose their innate shyness. Such an animal can no longer be poached. A trusting fox is more likely to become a victim of road traffic or hunting. And conflicts with neighbours in urban areas occur time and again. These animals also usually lack experience in hunting – in the wild, they would hardly have a chance of survival. But why do foxes end up in human hands in the first place? There is often a tragic fate behind it – as with Fee and Bresl.
Fee überlebte eine Tragödie
Fee was found as a tiny baby under a pile of wood that was about to be shredded. She was barely a few days old. The machines were stopped immediately, but her siblings and mother were nowhere to be found. Only Fee survived this tragedy. A hunter took the helpless bundle home with him. There, Fee grew up side by side with a dog in a human family. This ruled out the possibility of her being released into the wild. As Fee grew older, attempts were made to socialise her with older foxes. But the encounters were difficult: the others reacted suspiciously and aggressively. Eventually, she found refuge with “fox mum” Anna at Gut Aiderbichl.

Bresl had a guardian angel
Then another sad piece of news hit Henndorf: a fox pheasant had been run over on a motorway. Nearby, at the side of the road, a small ball of fur was discovered – just three weeks old. This puppy miraculously survived: Bresl. The hunter took care of her and made sure to minimise her contact with humans so that she could return to the wild. When Bresl was to be released back into the wild, it became clear that she would also be released to be shot by hunters. Whoever had such a guardian angel to survive this drama should not end up with a bullet, her rescuer thought. This is how Bresl also found her way to fox mum Anna.
Eine neue Freundschaft
Within a month, Fee and Bresl arrived in Henndorf. Their first meeting was cautious – Fee curious and cheeky, Bresl shy and reserved. Under Anna’s watchful eye, however, trust slowly grew. Today, the two are inseparable. They engage in intense puppy play and cuddle when tiredness gets the better of them. What they were both missing, they have now found at Gut Aiderbichl: a family.
At the moment, they are both still living in the separate puppy ward, because our Princess Stella is still shaking her head at so much exuberance. But soon, when the two have shed their playfulness, all three ladies will reside in the large, wooded fox enclosure in Henndorf – always under the care of our fox mum Anna, of course.
