Goose Martin stuck in a rake
A few weeks ago we received a request from a veterinarian if we could take in a goose. The fire department discovered and rescued Martin next to a brewery on the creek.
One wing was stuck in the rake and had been injured. After medical treatment Martin was brought to an animal shelter, where he had no conspecifics, however, and thus could not stay.
Now Martin lives in the large flock of geese at Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf and we think he feels safe and above all comfortable here.
Martin descends from the domestic goose
The history of the goose goes back to the Greeks. At that time, the goose was a sacred bird, whose beauty was admired and given especially to boys. Geese were not only kept for their sacredness, but also stuffed even then to produce fatty liver.
Among the Romans were Geese were also sacred animals, and were kept on the Capitol. When the Gauls invaded, the loudly screaming flock of geese drove away the enemies and thus saved the castle. - So behind our Martin is great history.
Geese are social animals and must not be kept alone
Geese and numerous songbirds decide on a partner with whom they then spend their lives. If the partner dies, they mourn. And so strongly that the animal stops eating and also wants to die.
A stupid goose does not exist any more than a stupid pig or a stupid goat. Since the research work of Konrad Lorenz it is known that geese have an extraordinarily highly developed social intelligence.
"So just because a lot of people think I'm a silly goose doesn't make it so. Somehow I slipped into the stream, got stuck with my wing and nothing worked. Thank God people discovered me and took me to the vet. My wing was injured, now everything is good again. And here, with all the Curly Geese, Pomeranian Geese and Warty Ducks and Runner Ducks, I am very happy and content. We have enough to chatter about all day long ..." - Martin has everything in view.
"For food there are all kinds of good things that we geese like. Leaves of bushes, sometimes currants, raspberries - we like all that. What makes us geese die are belladonna, laburnum and also cherry laurel. However, since we are not stupid - as we have already said - we do not even touch such things that are poisonous for us ... No goose is that stupid ...".
Domestic geese, unlike wild geese, cannot fly. Domesticated domestic geese like Martin are grazing animals and unable to fly. However, Martin and his fellow geese have strong legs and can walk long distances every day: there is enough space for this at Gut Aiderbichl.
