The goats Katrin and Daniel
A birthday present
Animals are living beings that deserve a species-appropriate, loving home. Before you think of animals as a gift for someone, you should first ask yourself: Why do I want to give this animal to this person? Do you consider the living situation and environment of the person you want to give an animal to? Do you think about other animals that the new owner may already have? Animals are by no means suitable for being passed back and forth, they need a fixed and good place in life. Therefore, animal gifts must be carefully considered.
Two Tauernschecken for their 30th birthday
Katrin and Daniel belong to an exclusive goat breed: the Tauernschecken goats. These fantastically beautiful goats are on the red list of endangered animals on our planet. Thanks to an initiative in Rauris, Salzburger Land, the population of these animals has been saved.
Katrin and Daniel were supposed to be able to live on a farm and were therefore given as a 30th birthday present to a lady who owns a farm. Unfortunately, this farm was not suitable for the two goats. There were already several sheep and horses living there and the two new arrivals disrupted their lives a little.
The new owner was now personally looking for a new home for her “gift”. She had correctly recognised that passing animals back and forth was not the right way to go and so taking in Katrin and Daniel at Gut Aiderbichl was her hope.
The speciality of the Tauernscheck goat
This beautiful goat breed is a very vigorous, long-legged and sure-footed mountain goat. Originally, Tauernscheck goats were kept in the Hohe Tauern mountains around the Großglockner. The coat is short with no hair and a lively brown/white/black or black/white pied colour. The goat’s head is pale throughout, the ears and eye area are pigmented. This made it easier for the herdsman to find the goats during snowfalls or when the alpine flora turned brown in autumn.
The udder of the Tauernscheck goat is set very high so that it is protected from injury in rough alpine terrain. We know that nature does nothing without an ulterior motive.
Katrin and Daniel now live at Gut Aiderbichl Carinthia
The involuntarily gifted lady said in her email to Dieter Ehrengruber “… I also don’t want the two of them to be sent around the neighbourhood. I would like to find a nice and suitable place for the two goats ….”.“They are very well-behaved, Katrin and Daniel, and have settled in very well. They want to be everywhere and so the two goats accompany me around the farm all day long. They have become two real friends for me.”
