Möhrli, the cloister cat

A new home

A very sad, desperate email message reached us in August 2020. Monika, who was strongly connected with the sisters of a convent and assisted them in many things, was in despair and told us the story of Möhrli, the convent cat, in sad words.

Some years ago, two young kittens were left behind on a farm when the farmer left. A black cat and a three-coloured lucky cat sat there, not knowing quite how life should go on.

The good Lord had an idea...

There was a convent near the farm. The sisters took in the little black cat and lovingly christened it Möhrli. The three-coloured sibling was taken in by a hermit who moved into the little farmhouse. So far so good. Möhrli had fun in the big convent garden and all the sisters pampered and loved little Möhrli.

Möhrli's home was a wind-protected outbuilding on the monastery grounds

Möhrli lived in a small outbuilding. There was a wicker basket lined with cosy blankets. The outhouse offered the cat protection from wind, rain, snow and heat. The sisters found her to be a rather shy cat, but over time Möhrli came to trust her rescuers more and more and loved to be stroked. She purred and felt good all around. A really good cat life in the midst of people who loved her more than anything. The cloister grounds were her territory and she enjoyed her time and took each day as it was. She had everything a cat needs: a "living basket", food, people, love and petting.

The idyll was to come to an abrupt end

Lately only two convent sisters lived there, and last year only one sister and the cat Möhrli were left. The sister had to leave the convent and move. The hermit also had to leave the small farm. She took the lucky cat with her. But what was to happen to the convent cat Möhrli? No one wanted her and with heavy hearts they were already thinking of putting the animal to sleep. Miraculously, this could be prevented. On a walk, the convent sister and Monika met Franziska Strässle, the cat mum from Gut Aiderbichl Teufen. And she had a glorious idea.

So Gut Aiderbichl was contacted and lo and behold, Möhrli was able to move to Gut Aiderbichl Teufen. The cat was lured into the transport box and the cloister sister and Monika brought her to Teufen together.

Here she lives, similar to her previous home, in an ideal location in the middle of meadows and without the danger of a road. It took a few days of settling in, but Möhrli was wonderfully accepted by the other cats. The convent sister has a huge load off her mind and wants to visit Möhrli in her new home as often as she can.

A time-honoured convent has been closed. The last local convent sister has to leave her home. But she was worried: a black cat lived with her and had become a good friend. Möhrli wanted...
