Möhrli, the monastery cat
A new home
A very sad, desperate email message reached us in August 2020: Monika, who had strong ties with the sisters of a convent and helped them with many things, was in despair and told us the story of Möhrli, the convent cat, in sad words.
A few years ago, two young kittens had been left behind on a farm when the farmer left. A black cat and a tricoloured lucky cat sat there, not really knowing what to do with their lives.
The good Lord had an idea …Möhrli’s home was a wind-protected outbuilding on the convent grounds
Möhrli lived in a small outbuilding. There was a wicker basket lined with cosy blankets. The outhouse offered the cat shelter from the wind, rain, snow and heat. The sisters found her to be a rather shy cat, but over time Möhrli grew to trust her rescuers more and more and loved to be stroked. She purred and felt completely at ease. A really good cat’s life surrounded by people who loved her more than anything. The monastery grounds were her territory and she enjoyed her time and took every day as it was. She had everything a cat needs: a “living basket”, food, people, love and cuddles.
The idyll was to come to an abrupt end
Recently, only two nuns had been living there, and last year only one sister and the cat Möhrli were left. The sister had to leave the convent and move. The hermit also had to leave the small farm. She took the lucky cat with her. But what was to happen to the convent cat Möhrli? Nobody wanted her and, with heavy hearts, they were already thinking of putting her to sleep. Miraculously, this was prevented. On a walk, the convent sister and Monika met Franziska Strässle, the cat mum from Gut Aiderbichl Teufen. And she had a brilliant idea.
So Gut Aiderbichl was contacted and lo and behold: Möhrli was able to move to Gut Aiderbichl Teufen. The cat was lured into the transport box and the convent sister and Monika brought Möhrli to Teufen together.
Here she lives in an ideal location, similar to the convent, surrounded by meadows and without the danger of a road. It took a few days of familiarisation, but Möhrli was wonderfully accepted by the other cats. It was a huge load off the monastery sister’s mind and she wants to visit Möhrli in her new home as often as possible.
