New addition to the "guinea pig gang" at Gut Aiderbichl Deggendorf

Mary, Pina, Pittyplatsch and Schocko

For four young guinea pigs Mary, Pina, Pittyplatsch and Schocko urgently needed to be found a new home due to the general rise in prices. A total of 11 guinea pigs waren rescued from poor conditions, three of them had already been placed with Gut Aiderbichlbefore the enquiry, four went to their forever home at Gut Aiderbichl Deggendorf, and the remaining four pets stayed in the family, who had rescued the cheeky little badgers. The animals were given fresh food every day and the cost of this for the large number of guinea pigs was beyond the financial means of the animal-loving people.

Guinea pigs - what is their function in the natural system?

Spanish seafarers brought the animals across the sea to Europe. The oldest finds that can be attributed to guinea pigs come from the north-central highlands of Peru and the coastal plain of Ecuador. Guinea pigs have been considered a delicacy in the Andes region for more than 4000 years.

Children love these small, robust and curious guinea pigs. However, when keeping them, it is important to remember that guinea pigs cannot live alone and should be kept at least in pairs, as they would suffer from loneliness. Human cuddles and company are no substitute for conspecifics.

Guinea pigs, like mice, are used as laboratory animals. Guinea pigs are kept in laboratories for medical tests, to research stress and social behaviour or to test new active ingredients in medicine. A large number of the fuzzy little animals are kept in zoos and animal parks as food animals for various predators and birds of prey, as well as for snakes.

Pittyplatsch

A rosette guinea pig with a funny hairstyle

When you look at the pretty white-brown Pittyplatsch, you will notice its unconventional coat. The firmly structured fur grows in a swirl shape on its body. The rosette guinea pig can have eight to ten such swirls of fur: four on the body and two each on the hips and hindquarters. The rosette guinea pig originally comes from what is now Ethiopia in Africa.

Pittyplatsch not only looks funny, he also impresses with his friendly and lively nature. He knows what he wants – and he shows this to his humans. Pittyplatsch is very lively and at the same time affectionate – stroking is great, but never against the direction of growth of the fur coat – this makes Pittyplatsch unfriendly and he nips.

Pina and Schocko

Two smooth-haired guinea pigs

Smooth-haired guinea pigs are probably the most popular breed of guinea pig. The coat is short, smooth, very dense and close-fitting, with no swirls, no fringes, no curls and no whiskers. This makes grooming particularly easy and takes little time. If necessary, comb Pina and Schocko with a brush or comb – and you’re done.

Pina is white and black on the body and brown on the back, Schocko is black and white, Mary is black and brown with a little white. Mary’s hair is long and, like Pittyplatsch’s, is combed regularly. What they all have in common is that they are bright, curious, sociable, social and cheerful animals and are a great addition to the “Deggendorf guinea pig gang”. They are all looking forward to your visit!

Treat your pet in such a way that you can cope with reversed roles in the next life without any problems.
