New arrival in the budgie villa at Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf
From the perspective of an Aiderbichler
(written by Gisela Pschenitschnig)
The beautiful, pastel green and yellow budgies Lisa, Lea, Steffi, Maria and Theresia as well as Jakob, dark green, are new residents in the budgie villa.
The previous owners have given up keeping budgies and asked for their parakeets to be admitted to Gut Aiderbichl.
“I actually want to be out there. My home is nature, the trees, the sky, the sun and the wind, chirp!”
The parakeets are native to Australia and humans imported the small, colourful animals to Europe in a roundabout way. They are among the most popular birds and live in many European households in cages that are very often too small. Some can fly around the home and perch on cupboards or doors.
Long ago, European gardens and homes were free of exotic plants. It has now become fashionable to keep a wide variety of exotic animals in the home. The silent suffering of these animals far from their homeland is barely recognised.
Animals are not stamps that you collect
Parrots, budgies, canaries, etc. – they are not rare stamps, but living creatures and sensitive pieces of the puzzle that have their home in the fabric of nature.
In 2017, Gut Aiderbichl’s animal emergency centre received a call for help. 80 budgerigars were allegedly living in an old flat. We were amazed when we actually found 323 parakeets on site. The animals were living in a very small space, it stank, it smelled of despair and hopelessness for the little feathered friends. All the budgies were carefully caught and brought to Gut Aiderbichl Gänserndorf to a large aviary, where they live together with over 100 parrots.
Everything is a cycle and everything makes sense
Man must learn to accept nature and leave it as it is. We must learn to repair the many cracks in nature’s system. Human egoism must be curbed – let’s leave the animals where they are at home. Similar to the thought: I don’t eat strawberries in winter, but regional fruit and vegetables. I accept nature as it is.
The budgie villa at Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf
The wooden house, which is protected outside by a huge enclosure net, is now home to just over 100 budgies. Lisa, Lea, Steffi, Maria, Theresa and Jakob feel very much at home among their fellow birds. Our budgies particularly enjoy nibbling, chirping or snoozing in the sun.
We are eagerly awaiting the warm spring, because then we will let our budgies fly in the small garden in front of the wooden house. One or two of the birds might even perch on a human shoulder, because anyone who wants to can take a break in the little budgie garden and watch the budgies go about their merry business.Sincerely, Your Gisela.
If you want to hear the song of a bird, don't buy a cage, plant a tree.
