Pig Babe
A real lucky pig
Happy and content, Babe the piggy has found his home at Gut Aiderbichl in Henndorf. Although his destiny had been quite different …
Little Babe should have had four long ears, long legs and a cross on his back
A woman wanted a donkey for her birthday and was astonished when a piglet ran towards her. The disappointment was huge and unmistakable. What do you do with a little pig when you’ve wished for a donkey? The recipient runs a riding stable and the donkey should probably have lived there together with the horses. An Aiderbichl employee found out about the unsuccessful birthday present and contacted Dieter Ehrengruber. “Do we have room?” was his question to the animal keepers. We had room and the little babe could come.
Why animals don't belong on the wish list
Whether it’s a birthday, wedding or Christmas – the wish for an animal must be carefully considered. In contrast to a gift voucher for perfume, jewellery or something else, the thought and knowledge that an animal is a living being and not a “want-to-have product” must come first. In the best case scenario, it will live with its owner for a lifetime and not just a few hours. Animals are not sensational products like fireworks or giant cakes from which a clown jumps. They live and have needs that must be met in a species-appropriate manner.
Babe is the prince in the pig palace
If anyone is happy, it’s Babe. From the very beginning, his best friend and teacher at the Pig Palace was Bernadette, a rescued Pietrain pig. Bernadette was his surrogate mum and his teacher. From her, Babe learnt how to judge people and also how to beg for a good treat from his keepers. Bernadette also taught him that pigs have strict hierarchical laws among themselves, which he must adhere to if he wants to get out of a situation “scot-free”.
Unfortunately, Bernadette went over the Rainbow Bridge a few days ago and Babe didn’t really know what had happened.

Bables and Roberta took Babe into their cuddle group
We know that pigs are highly social and intelligent animals. Bables in particular noticed that after Bernadette was gone, Babe showed a great need for protection and cuddling. He got the “OK” from the two female pigs Bables and Roberta and, when they are lying cosily in the thick straw bed, he squeezes himself between his “pig aunts”. Roberta is a little stricter with the young babe, but Bables is already there and the balance is restored.
Babe and all his friends at the Pig Palace in Henndorf wish you a healthy, happy and successful New Year and look forward to your visit to Gut Aiderbichl in Henndorf!
