Her little lambs Erika and Gitte make her happy all round
The white mountain sheep Sisi and Franz were confiscated by the veterinary office due to circumstances contrary to animal welfare. The sheep were placed on a farm, but could not stay there for life. Sisi and Franz also lacked proof of origin, meaning that it would have been impossible for private owners to keep the animals due to the lifelong conditions imposed by the authorities.
The sheep is far removed from the dumb sheep
In the case of poor animal husbandry, to say that they are “just animals and stupid sheep at that” is an ill-considered statement.Sheep generally do not have a reputation for being particularly intelligent. Perhaps this is because they are perceived as a bleating mass that trots after the lead sheep. Various studies with sheep have shown that they can move intelligently through mazes, recognise up to 50 faces and remember them for up to two years.
Sheep have emotions such as fear, anger, despair and boredom. They feel disgust and happiness.
Peculiarities of the White Mountain Sheep
The White Mountain Sheep has a narrow, noble head and is hornless. The long, wide hanging ears are also characteristic of the mountain sheep. The legs are strong with tight pasterns and hard claws, which are important for climbing and sure-footedness.
The 15 to 20 cm long, white wool is slightly wavy or smooth and is shorn in spring and autumn.
The mountain sheep is suitable for rearing in the high mountains but also for grazing in small flocks. The mountain sheep has the best maternal qualities, which Sisi is currently demonstrating.
Sisi and Franz's affection was to be rewarded
Sheep are pregnant for up to 150 days. When we took Sisi and Franz in at the end of July, there was no sign of pregnancy. On 2 November, Sisi gave birth to two healthy, beautiful baby sheep . The father is undoubtedly Franz.
One of the important points of Gut Aiderbichl’s philosophy is that it allows the animal mothers to keep their babies that are born at Aiderbichl. Sisi has enough milk for her two offspring and so the little sheep family is well occupied with suckling, training and cuddling.
The babies Gitte and Erika are curious and run after their mum all day long, only to snuggle up tiredly to their mum’s warm wool again. Sheep are not only clever animals, they also love to show their affection.
Watching sheep cuddling could be like being in the middle of sheep yoga. Total deep relaxation and cosy breathing express contentment and emotions. When sheep show their affection, they rub their heads against each other, linger in cheek contact and cuddle their bodies against their neighbours.
The sheep family’s happiness is perfect
Sisi, Franz and their Gitte and Erika are completely happy with their existence. They enjoy life in the flock of sheep in Eslarn and bring Michael, the caretaker, a lot of joy.Michael Aufhauser’s idea of giving animals a voice and importance is becoming increasingly popular. More and more people are taking notice and acting in the interests of animals.
