The "Schnackerin" from Gut Aiderbichl

A baby donkey fights its way into the world on the Ballermann Ranch.

It was on a bitterly cold December night when a tiny little donkey was born quietly – almost unnoticed – at Gut Aiderbichl’s Ballermann Ranch in Lower Saxony – baby Sally was born.

The little worm was shivering all over, it was so icy cold. But the Lord God had been kind to the little life, allowing little Sally to be born surrounded by her family of grandma, aunts and brother Harry. They bundled the tiny baby into the deep straw, where it was quite cosy and warm.

What great luck for such a small life, because it was only thanks to Gut Aiderbichl’s courageous intervention that it was possible to save the entire donkey family and give them a new, safe home at Ballermann Ranch, Gut Aiderbichl’s northernmost branch. The owner had become unemployed and his marriage had broken down. Nobody wanted to take in the donkeys as a family. The pregnant donkey mum Lucy was at risk of being separated from her sisters and grandma Bonita. She would have been completely terrified, all alone with her baby in her belly.

When Dieter Ehrengruber learnt of the donkey family’s plight, he did not hesitate and, together with the owners of the “Ballermann” party brand, Annette and André Engelhardt, decided to take them in at the Ballermann Ranch. The Engelhardts had built a new donkey village here just a few months ago, which offered space for fifteen long-eared animals. It was as if fate had set the course.

In the meantime, the tiny little donkey has become a self-confident donkey girl who does not hesitate to voice her opinion loudly to the world. And because Sally always has something to say about everything, everyone just calls her the “Schnackerin”. If you ever want to visit Sally at the Ballermann Ranch, you will easily find her among all the rescued animals – she is always in the front row.
