The tortoise and the hare
Do you know the story of the tortoise and the hare who got into a competition with each other? The aim was to find out who was the fastest and most efficient of them. They wanted to organise a race and invited all the animals in the area to be their audience. One of the animals gave the starting signal and off they went.
There is strength in tranquillity
The turtle moved at its usual slow pace towards its destination.
The hare knew that he could naturally run a lot faster and made fun of the tortoise. He became an audience clown and imitated the tortoise, crawled slowly in front of him and then took another big leap forwards. The hare did somersaults and the audience enjoyed the hare’s performance. The hare was spurred on to do even more until he was so tired that he sank to the ground and fell asleep. The tortoise reached its destination in comfort. The hare’s eagerness to jump had not brought him to the finish line. At Gut Aiderbichl, all animals reach the finish line.
Tortoise Leonardo and his rabbits
Leonardo, a Russian tortoise, is around 70 years old and only just younger than his owner. He had to move into a retirement home and could no longer care for his companion of many decades. And in addition to Leonardo, there were also rabbits in the same household: Melvin, Colette and DaVinci. We wanted to save together what belongs together, so we took them all in together at Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf.
Survivalists and gourmets
The diet of “old man” Leonardo is high in fibre and consists of hay, dark lettuce and greens such as collard greens, kale and turnips, mustard and dandelion leaves as well as various vegetables such as pumpkin, sweetcorn, peppers, carrots, prickly pear and sweet potatoes. No wonder – so much healthy food keeps you fit and young. Tortoises can live up to 100 years. They also need plenty of places to hide and keep busy, they love sunbathing and enjoy everything that is good for them. Leonardo masters the art of enjoyment perfectly.
Sensitive and intelligent
Its cognitive abilities are also outstanding. He perceives ground vibrations and shaking well and can anticipate what is coming: Leonardo recognised his owner exactly, here he already recognises our keepers – by their gait. Sitting in his beautiful tortoise enclosure, Leonardo therefore knows exactly when or from whom his precious food is coming.
Opposite in the rabbit house, his friends, the rabbits Colette and DaVinci, frolic happily and peek over here and there at their friend Leonardo.
Our wonderful Melvin has already moved into his new home.
The sweet bunnies Colette and DaVinci can also go back to a new home if loving people are found who will devote time, affection and loving care to them.</span
