Warty ducks released

Christof, Olaf, Sven, Anna and Elsa

A lady from a neighbouring community contacted the Aiderbichleranimal emergency centre. Warty ducks had “turned up” on the uncle’s property, which he now feedsand looks after. Two of these beautiful animals have not yet been caught. It is suspected that they have been abandoned and are no more than two years old. There is bestthe concernthat they will not survive the winter, that they will not survive the winter andthey will not surviveand Good Aiderbichlwas askedto take in the warty ducks, to take in the marmosets.

The origin of the mallard

The mallard is the only duck breed descended from the South American muscovy duck, and is also known as the flying duck, barbary duck, turkey duck, mute duck and domestic duck.
The natives of South America were already keeping the mallard before 1514 – the time when the mallard was introduced to Europe.

Ducks and geese are known for chattering and quacking and always drawing attention to themselves wherever they go. The mallard is completely different. It is a very quiet duck and does not quack, but communicates with gurgling and hissing sounds.

It can live up to 19, sometimes even up to 50 years. The head of the mallard is strikingly large and the forehead is flat. The sex of the mallard is recognised by the forehead wart. In the drake, the wart extends tongue-like to the nostrils and, unlike other ducks, the drake has no tail curl. The duck’s forehead wart is shaped like a drop of syrup.

The mallard is easy and hardy to keep. They quickly become tame and are happy to be lured in for a juicy lettuce leaf.

Like other ducks, mallard ducks can also be kept together with chickens and other duck breeds. However, the roosts should be kept separate: ducks love the wet, but chickens love the dry.

Christof, Olaf, Sven, Anna and Elsa are now waddling around Gut Aiderbichl in Henndorf

Christof, Olaf, Sven, Anna and Elsa always walked together, especially at first. First of all, the beautiful mallard ducks probably wanted to see their new surroundings. Lots of runner ducks, decoy geese and mallard ducks like our Frieda have now become their species-appropriate friends. Frieda was given away a few months ago because her partner died and the previous owners didn’t want to get a second duck. She shouldn’t have to live alone and so, like the five warthogs from the neighbouring village of Henndorf, she too has found happiness and friends at Gut Aiderbichl in Henndorf.

Omitting animals like Christof, Olaf, Sven, Anna and Elsa makes just as little sense as giving them away.
