Wart ducks exposed

Christof, Olaf, Sven, Anna and Elsa

A lady from a neighboring community contacted the Aiderbichl Animal Emergency Center. Wart ducks had "appeared" on her uncle's property and now he feeds and cares for them. Two of these beautiful animals could not be caught yet. It is assumed that they have been abandoned and are at most two years old. There is concern that they will not survive the winter and Gut Aiderbichl was asked to take the mallard ducks in.

The origin of the wart duck

The wart duck is the only breed of duck descended from the South American muscovy duck, and is also known as the flying duck, barbary duck, Turk's duck, mute duck and domestic duck.
The natives of South America kept the warty duck before 1514 - when the warty duck was introduced to Europe.

Ducks and geese are known for cackling and quacking, always and everywhere drawing attention to themselves. The wart duck is quite different. It is a very quiet duck and does not quack, but communicates with gurgling and hissing sounds.

It lives up to 19 years old, sometimes even up to 50. The head of the warty duck is strikingly large and the forehead is flat. The sex of the mallard is identified by the forehead. In the drake, the wart extends tongue-like to the nostrils and, unlike the other ducks, the drake has no tail curl. The nipple of the duck has the shape of a syrup drop.

Talking about its attitude, the wart duck is simple and resistant. It quickly becomes tame and for a juicy lettuce leaf, the mallard can be lured gladly.

Like other ducks, wart ones can be kept together with chickens and other duck breeds. However, the roosts should necessarily be separated: ducks love the wet, but chickens love the dry.

Christof, Olaf, Sven, Anna and Elsa now waddle to Gut Aiderbichl in Henndorf

Christof, Olaf, Sven, Anna and Elsa always ran together, especially at the beginning. First of all, the beautiful mallard ducks probably wanted to have a look at their new surroundings. Lots of running ducks, curly geese and warty ducks like our Frieda, have now become their species-appropriate friends. Frieda was given away a few months ago, because her partner passed away and the previous owners did not want to get a second duck. She should not have to live alone, and so she, like the five mallard ducks from the neighboring village of Henndorf, has found her happiness and friends at Gut Aiderbichl in Henndorf too.

Abandoning animals like Christof, Olaf, Sven, Anna and Elsa makes as little sense as giving animals away.
