Dignity and utility
Bull calf Iwan was "worthless"
From the perspective of Gut Aiderbichl
(written by Gisela Pschenitschnig)
Iwan is about five months old - he should not have reached this age at all, because they actually wanted to put him to sleep. From the breed Iwan is a Holstein-blackbunt-Cattle. Iwan has a white triangle on his forehead, white legs, but otherwise black. The bull calf could only straighten its hind legs, the front legs were deformed. What all this meant is obvious. He was worthless.
Dieter Ehrengruber learned of Iwan's fate and immediately had the pickup organized: Iwan and his bull friend Michi now live at Gut Aiderbichl Deggendorf's Begegnungshof.
Consistent treatments showed health success ...
The bronchitis is almost cured, the front legs are straight, and Ivan can stand up normally, lie down and even jump around on the grass.
Ivan grows and grows, and that is the reason why he could not stay in the stable of his rescuer after all. Here there are only female cows and unfortunately no place for a growing bull.
... and people rethought ...
and so Gut Aiderbichl was also allowed to take in Michi, Iwan's best friend a few days later. Michi is a few weeks younger than Iwan, and also a Holstein-Blackbunt Cattle. His coat is white with black spots.
Animals are fellow creatures - Things have the value we give them
Every animal, whether healthy or with health problems, has the right to a second chance. Euthanizing or slaughtering is quick - too quick.
The example of Iwan shows that with patience and dedication, initial health problems can change for the better. Sometimes they don't, but in Iwan's case they do.
The life of an animal should not be measured with "it brings profit or it brings no profit". Nature does not bring "worthless" creatures into its system, yet every fellow creature has its value and its reason to live.
Iwan and Michi are happy and content, and bring a breath of fresh air to Gut Aiderbichl Deggendorf's Begegnungshof with their zest for life.
Dignity and utility - just to think about.
Sincerely, your Gisela
