Years ago there were 7 Shire Horses - now 6 little budgerigars
which should not be separated
Stories repeat themselves. A few years ago, we took in 7 Shire Horses whose owners were no longer able to look after the huge horses due to their age. Under no circumstances did they want to give their horses away individually. Only in a group – that was the important motto.
A few weeks ago, we received an enquiry about taking in 6 budgerigars. The motto here was also: only in the group and not separated from each other.
Dieter Ehrengruber has always believed that there is a solution for everything. In 2017, there was a solution in the interests of the animals for taking in the huge Shire Horses, and this time the positive decision was made in favour of much, much smaller animals, namely 6 beautiful budgerigars.

They gave their owners a lot of pleasure
A couple who love animals bought 6 budgies with the beautiful names Blacky, Emely, Filou, Sam, Sky and Zazu over 2 years ago. They thought everything through carefully before the birds moved in.
Some things in life are beyond human control. Depression and long stays in hospital made it increasingly difficult to keep the singing friends. Necessary operations and further stays in hospital meant that the flock of birds finally needed a new forever home.
“It breaks our hearts and we are so sad that we have to give our birds away, but due to our health situation I unfortunately see no other way out …” – said the owner of the budgies.
So the budgie house in Henndorf has new flatmates again
The wooden house, which is now home to numerous budgerigars, is becoming increasingly full and colourful.
Blacky, blue and white, Emely, turquoise and white, Filou, yellow and green, Sky, snow white, Zazu, blue and Sam, a yellow and green showy budgerigar – they are now all members of the large budgerigar family.
Show parakeets and their importance
Show budgerigars are bred in England. They are larger and more impressive than the familiar budgerigars. The show wave parakeet has a cap-shaped head plumage, which often leads to the birds suffering from eye irritation and, due to their size, flight and weight problems.
Sam is doing well, and you can tell by the way he likes to sit fluffed up, crunching his beak and retracting one leg. Show conures are calmer than standard conures.
The budgerigar and its language and music preferences
The small, colourful birds communicate with 11 different sounds. The most typical sound is probably the beautiful trill. The little friends love classical piano pieces, pop music and pop tunes, and many of them happily whistle along to the melodies.
Music is relaxing, but budgerigars can also feel anxious and stressed. Then the body is stretched out and the budgie squats down. They can also look upwards to find a possible escape route.
In the budgie house there is chirping, chatting and cheerful singing. The birds are in a good mood and happy.
Blacky, Emely, Filou, Sam, Sky and Zazu would also recognise their people by their voices. They are clever and, just like cows, pigs, dogs etc., these little fellows don’t forget their humans.
The Gut Aiderbichl Academy is organising a live webinar on the topic of budgies on 4 July 2023 – Budgies – health, keeping and feeding – gut-aiderbichl.com.
If we lose sight of the well-being of other beings, it is as if we were blind in one eye.
