Gerd had "lost his way" into the chicken coop of a hunter and was to be shot by him. When a certain Mr. Gerd Viebig, who made Gut Aiderbichl Maria Schmolln possible, learned about him and heard his story, he wanted to help the hunting terrier in need. The research revealed that little Gerd came from a place nearby and had belonged to an elderly gentleman. When he passed away, Gerd is said to have tried for a long time to wake his master by nibbling on the man's fingers. When the man was eventually found, the dog slipped through the door and went on his travels. One day, he landed in Maria Schmolln and discovered the barn full of chickens. But the hunter who owned the barn locked him in a potato cellar and reported the foundling to the municipality. When no one came forward after four days, the hunter threatened to shoot Gerd. Fortunately, Gerd's life was saved.
