We usually know nothing about the previous histories of the animals we buy at the annual auctions. They have nothing more to expect from life and sadly face their uncertain fate. But surely there was once a day when they were of use to someone or made children's eyes light up - until their owners then turned their backs on them. And if no one can be found to take in the animal that has become a nuisance, the only option is usually to sell it to a trader. This is how we became aware of Mule Jane at a horse auction. She is very spirited and gets her way. This would have been her death sentence if we had not rescued her.
