Little Odin lay down on his little cloud of hay

I am not dead, I only change rooms, I live in you and walk through your dreams.

Just a few weeks ago, we were happy to receive Odin, a degu about five years old. He came from an animal-loving family who had lost their heart to degus. They often took them from the shelter - seen that his fellow degus died, Odin was left alone at some point. He should not live a lonely life, and the family asked to take in their Odin.

So Odin came to Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf and made our Anna's heart beat faster. She loves especially degus, ferrets, chinchillas, also rats and foxes. So now came Odin - a beauty with gray-brown fur. At first Odin was rather shy and reserved and Anna assured him: "Dear Odin look. There are already other degus waiting for you. Felix, Pupi, Lea and Lena. You're going to be a member of a really great degu family here."

Odin spent the following weeks in his little house and loved it when Anna brought fresh hay. In no time at all, he started to build a great hay cave, and then he wanted to cuddle - what could be better than cuddling. When Anna called him, he sharpened his little ears as if he knew what was coming: food, maybe fresh hay and a little stroking - but Anna had to be skilled.

Odin seemed happy and content, and it would only be a short time before he could join the other degus in the degu house. Nothing indicated that Odin had a health problem.

Shocked, Anna had to discover her little, new pupil Odin dead in his hay bed one morning. Quietly, without any signs of agony, he laid peacefully in his crib with his little eyes closed. She carefully picked him up and put him back in the hay until the vet confirmed that he was probably a little older than she thought. Degus live between five and nine years in private homes.
It was as if Odin had laid down on his hay bed to sleep forever. The life candle of the little degus had gone out. Accompanied by incomprehensible sadness and also horror that Odin was simply no more, all who were allowed to know him said goodbye.

Whether a large or a small beloved animal goes, the sadness is always the same.

Dear Odin,
we would have liked to have you with us longer - however, you decided to sleep. Thank you for letting us get to know you.

Take care, Odin.

Goodbyes are not forever. Goodbyes are not the end. They just mean that we miss you until we see you again on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.
