The dark red macaw is also known as the green-winged macaw. It grows up to 90 cm long and is mostly found in Brazil and northern Paraguay. They live in groups and are very social animals. This fact is often forgotten when amateurs fulfil their dream of having their own parrot. There is also often a lack of prior research and full awareness of what a parrot needs to be kept in a species-appropriate manner. Besides their intelligence, docility and loyalty, these animals are also very noisy, not particularly clean and can destroy furniture. At this point, it becomes too colourful for most people and the parrot has to go. Schnucky probably met the same fate, but he was lucky. He came into the hands of a couple who ran a private sanctuary. When they had to close down the farm for reasons of age, he became part of our family.
