Sammy the ox
and his role as a friend for Resi and Amadeus
From the perspective of Gut Aiderbichl
(written by Gisela Pschenitschnig)
Many new animal rescues have been carried out in the last few weeks. Nevertheless, I would like to report on a few animals that have found their forever home at the Begegnungshof in Henndorf for some time now, and, who, for various reasons, have found new companions looked for new companions.
The gentle giant Sammy
Sammy is a black Scottish Highland cattle and is therefore one of the oldest registered cattle breeds, originating from Scotland. Scottish Highland cattle are considered to be very robust and hardy, and are also used for grazing. Their special feature is their huge, wide, curved horns and their long, shaggy coat.
The coal-black Sammy was born over 10 years ago and was then bottle-fed. We succeeded in turning Sammy into a strong and self-confident bull.
Sammy fulfilled his duties as a breeding bull for many years. In order to avoid inbreeding, another forever home had to be found for Sammy. When Sammy was still a small bull, his owners had already promised him that he would never go to the slaughterhouse. So he came to Gut Aiderbichl and was neutered before the move.
Sammy lived together with the cows Heike, Bambi and Sarah at Gut Aiderbichl for many years. Unfortunately, the three cows are no longer there. Sammy should not lead a lonely life, and an attempt was made to socialize him with the small cattle Resi and Amadeus.
Amadeus and Resi look very small next to the giant Sammy
Amadeus comes from Burgenland and is small in stature due to a genetic defect. The owner kept him in a separate stable to protect him from attacks by the large herd of cattle.
Resi is also small in stature and comes from Vorarlberg. She would probably not have survived her stay on the mountain pasture and was therefore given away. Cattle need social contact, so living in isolation would not be a solution for life.
Right from the start, there was so much warmth and harmony between Amadeus and Resi, as if they came from the same cow. When Amadeus is outside, Resi runs after him straight away. They cuddle together in the straw, never fighting or bumping into each other for food. Both seem happy and content and have now found their great protector in Sammy.
It is a wonderful picture when the black, shaggy, huge Sammy is out in the pasture with his little friends Resi and Amadeus, or trying to take tentative steps in the fresh snow.
Nothing is more relaxing than watching animals.
Sincerely, your Gisela.
