Nugget
He became unkind to children
From the perspective of Gut Aiderbichl
(written by Gisela Pschenitschnig)
Nugget (1,5 years), became more and more aggressive to the children. He lived in an environment where children were allowed to the chickens, but, this became too dangerous due to Nugget's behavior.
The family had taken their rooster to their hearts, but his behavior was no longer acceptable and too dangerous. Nugget had to go. But where to?
"Now we are desperately looking for a good place for our Nugget ..."
People loved their young rooster Nugget, had to part with him, looked for a place for Nugget, but no one would take him. In no case Nugget should be slaughtered. So Nugget found a slaughter-free place at Gut Aiderbichl in Carinthia.
Why do roosters like Nugget attack?
Most roosters are peaceful animals. As with humans, there are such and such "Streithansln" among the roosters. However, it is not in the nature of the rooster, but rather that a quarreling rooster reflects misbehavior of its owner.
Towards other chickens the rooster kicks or pecks, towards humans, however, he lets out his anger by jumping at them and attacking them.
In what situations does the rooster itself feel attacked?
From the moment of sexual maturity, the rooster sees his keeper as a competitor. This phenomenon is often observed in hand-raised roosters. Especially if there has been an extremely good relationship between the human and the animal.
In principle, it is also the case that the rooster takes the highest rank in a group and sees himself as responsible for the lower-ranking hens and roosters. He wants to protect, which in turn can mean aggressive behavior.
Roosters who have experienced something bad in the past tend to react aggressively in certain situations. They react out of fear of possibly being kicked, hit or otherwise mistreated again.
All this does not apply to Nugget's life situation. What really made him attack his humans, who did not want to do him any harm, he unfortunately cannot tell us.
Nugget and his friends Bud Spencer, Terence Hill and Ferdinand
Nugget has been living at Gut Aiderbichl's home farm in Carinthia for a few weeks. There are some roosters there, including Bud Spencer and Terence Hill. The two were given away by the owners because there was a "surplus of males" in the henhouse and thus many quarrels. Ferdinand had a broken leg, was given away. The wounds have healed.
There is a good balance between chickens and roosters on the farm, so there are no problems that get out of hand. He gets along well with all the animals on the farm in Carinthia, the only people there are Markus, the estate manager, and the animal keepers. Nugget has understood that here he is simply allowed to be a rooster. Here, the rooster is allowed to crow, and, if need be, to argue sometimes, which, however, happens very rarely.
Nugget enjoys his young life and seems to signal:
What other people think of you is not your problem.
