Shepherd dog Jimmy
escaped death at the last second
(written by Gisela Pschenitschnig)
Jimmy escaped death at the last second because the vet said "no" to euthanising the young, healthy dog.
The owner took Jimmy to the animal hospital to have him put down. Not because Jimmy was terminally ill and in pain, not because he was old. He was to be put down, because he was messing around. The animal hospital immediately called Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf and urgently asked for Jimmy to be taken in. Before that, he was thoroughly examined. He seemed to be in perfect health. However, Jimmy's coat was so unkempt and matted that it had to be shaved off from his hips to the middle of his spine.
Take two minutes to think with me...
It's about humanity for animals. Animals are not things. They are fellow creatures and we bear responsibility for them. But how do we behave? Thousands of rescued animals have found a new home at Gut Aiderbichl. How inhuman and cynical do we actually treat life? The way we treat animals is the way we treat people in an emergency. We tell the fates of the rescued animals. We do not always tell "nice" stories. We also always want to signal hope: We will soon make everything better, because there is hope.
Animals are defenceless, they don't shoot back, they don't lock us up, they don't let us slaughter them. They are not indifferent or cynical. In their treatment of animals you can see the state of a society. Whether it still has values like tolerance, responsibility and charity. On the globe there are the oceans, the vegetation, living fellow creatures like animals and humans. We are all one.
Jimmy is just learning about happiness and love
Jimmy is just learning about happiness and love
Jimmy's bleak life takes a new path at Gut Aiderbichl in Carinthia. Markus, the estate manager, and his staff approach Jimmy's soul gently, sensitively and above all with a lot of love. Jimmy gets the attention he has not received in the last five years. He squeals with delight when the carers come with the food, when they groom his fur, play or cuddle with him, or go for extensive walks with their new charge.
Jimmy may be a little impetuous at times, but he is very eager to learn and gets on very well with his fellow dogs.
He is so grateful for every stroke he gets. For kind words, then he holds his head attentively to the side and listens. Jimmy has been with us for a few weeks and now we have the impression that he is even starting to smile. His eyes are shining, he is very attentive and loves us. Once again, an animal shows us that no matter what happens to him, he is always ready to forgive people.
Jimmy in new splendour
His fur has almost grown back and is shiny, his eyes are shining and his joyful beeping proves his zest for life. He has earned a person or a family who loves him and takes him in as a member of the family. Jimmy cannot pay money for this. Their love will be rewarded with affection and joy and the most loyal doggy eyes in the world.
The greatness and moral progress of a nation can be measured by how it treats its animals.
- Mahatma Gandhi
Jimmy needs the contact, the approach and the guidance of an animal-loving person.
