Three silk chickens in their new forever home
Three silkie chickens were urgently looking for a new home. All attempts remained unsuccessful and Henriette, Jörg and Roadrunner were threatened with slaughter. The three silkie chickens are just one year old and were in a tricky situation. Time was of the essence, and Dieter Ehrengruber agreed to take in Roadrunner, Jörg and Henriette just as hastily.
Silkie chickens are special, but not mimosas
More than 2,000 years ago, Aristotle already reported about the special chickens with the silky plumage. In the Middle Ages, silk chickens were thought to be a cross between rabbits and chickens.
Among the silkie chickens, a distinction is made between the Japanese silkie chicken with black skin and the Siamese silkie chicken with white skin. Bones, skin and also the organs can be jet black. Whether they have light or dark bones and light or dark organs, they are all calm and friendly chickens. Silkie chickens lay light brown eggs and feed on grass, worms and grains. Their life expectancy is about 5 years.
A special feature is also the very pronounced social behavior. Regular, loving and patient human attention makes them trusting, they can be taken in the arm and even stroked.
All the peculiarities of silkie chickens, nevertheless, do not make them mimosas. Thus, they are robust and undemanding in husbandry. Compared to other chicken breeds, silkie chickens require less space in the chicken coop.
They cannot fly and therefore spend the night on the ground rather than on the chicken perch. Even though they have short legs and look rather clumsy due to their fluffy feathers, they are able to easily outrun any other chicken when it comes to a worm in the grass: overtakeand feel like a winner.
How are Henriette, Jörg and Roadrunner doing in their new home?
When you walk down the avenue at Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf you will see Henriette, Jörg and Roadrunner on your right. There they look for worms and other food on the lush green meadow.
Visitors linger at the fence and observe Roadrunner and his chickens-friends with pleasure. Henriette makes herself quite happy next to the red chicken house and Jörg loves to flirt with the visitors.
The silkie chickens also get along with chickens of other breeds and cackle their peace hymn all day long in all harmony. The fenced meadow offers enough space to live peacefully together. If one of the chickens does decide to have a cozy, secluded day, there are places to retreat: under the chicken house in the shade, inside the chicken coop, or somewhere along the fence.
