About the history of the Hungarian Zackel sheep
The Zackel sheep is a Hungarian sheep breed that has existed since the 9th century. The ancestor is the Urial, a wild sheep whose domestication took place in Southwest Asia. Originally, the v-shaped twisted horns were screwed horizontally. Since the 16th/17th century, there is the v-shaped form of the horns.
Until the second half of the 19th century there was active trade in sheep wool and hides, then began the cultivation of the breed with finer wool - merino sheep. The flocks of zackel sheep in the large Hungarian puszta became smaller and smaller. Since the beginning of the 19th century, the Hungarian Zackel sheep have been on the red list of extinct species.
The economic use of the Hungarian Zackel sheep
Zackel sheep are considered good milk producers, their meat is nutritious and not fat. The milk yield of a sheep after giving birth to a lamb is up to 60 liters. More and more the breeding of the Zackel sheep goes in the direction of using them as organic food.
Currently, the Hungarian Zackel Sheep is bred mainly for the preservation of genetic purity. It is interesting that the Zackel sheep is gaining more and more importance of a tourist attraction and there are more and more breeders of this great animal breed.
Gut Aiderbichl and the endangered species of Hungarian Zackel sheep
For many years, Gut Aiderbichl has been increasingly committed to endangered animal species and breeds, including the beautiful Zackel sheep. Zackel sheep have been living at Gut Aiderbichl since 2014.
The coat of the Zackel sheep is curly and very densely grown. We were amazed eight years ago when Doris, the Zackel sheep lady, gave birth to two healthy lambs: we named them Eva and Martina. Today Doris, Eva and Martina walk among the large flock of Zackel sheep on the pastures of Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf.
Zackel ram Hercules caused a huge surprise
Hercules was castrated, and caused joy and surprise at Gut Aiderbichl: he fathered 9 sheep babies. It happens that castrated animals still have a few weeks of active sperm. Mother Nature is more cunning than man and she is also joking. Mia, DorliFritzi, Tom and Jerry, Bonnie and Clyde, Keanu and Vanessa are all well and bring cheerful bleating to the ancestral flock of sheep at Gut Aiderbichl.
Nature is inexorable and unchanging, and it does not care whether the hidden reasons and ways of its action are understandable to man or not.
