The goats Katrin and Daniel

A birthday present

Animals are living beings that deserve a species-appropriate, loving home. Before you think of animals as a gift for someone, you should first ask yourself: Why do I want to give this animal to that person? Do you consider the life situation and environment of the person you want to give an animal to? Do you think about other animals that the new owner may already have? Animals are by no means suitable to be passed back and forth, they need a firm and good place in life. Therefore, animal gifts must be well thought out.

Two Tauernschecks for the 30th birthday

Katrin and Daniel belong to an exclusive breed of goat: the Tauernscheck goats. These fantastically beautifully marked goats are on the red list of our planet's dying animals. Through an initiative in Rauris, Salzburg province, the animals' population could be saved.

Katrin and Daniel should be able to live on a farm and were therefore given as a gift for the 30th birthday of a lady who owns one. Unfortunately, this farm was not suitable for the two goats. Several sheep and horses already lived there and the two newcomers upset their lives a little.
The new owner was now personally looking for a new home for her "gift". She had correctly realised that passing animals back and forth is not the right way to go and so taking Katrin and Daniel in at Gut Aiderbichl was her hope.

The special feature of the Tauern she-goat

This beautiful goat breed is a very vital, long-legged and sure-footed mountain goat. Originally, Tauernscheck goats were kept in the Hohe Tauern around the Großglockner. The coat is short and without hangings and lively brown/white/black or black/white pied. On the head the goat has a continuous pallor, the ears and the eye area are pigmented. This made it easier for the dairyman to find the goats even when snow fell or when the alpine flora turned brown in autumn.
The udder of the Tauernscheck goat is set very high so that it is protected from injury in rough alpine terrain. We know that nature does nothing without ulterior motives.

Katrin and Daniel now live at Gut Aiderbichl Carinthia

In her email to Dieter Ehrengruber, the lady who was involuntarily given a gift said "...I don't want the two to be sent around the areaeither. I want a nice and suitable place for the two goats...".

They have now found it. Together with 16 other goats at Gut Aiderbichl, they bring life to the many rescued animals at the animal home in Carinthia.
Goats are known to be very curious, and so they accompany Markus Leitner, manager of the Köglerhof, all day long. Markus tells us in a joyful voice: "They are very well-behaved, Katrin and Daniel, and have settled in very well. They want to be everywhere and so I am accompanied by the two goats all day long on the farm. They have become two real friends for me."

Since goats can live up to 20 years, Markus Leitner has a good chance of having his friends Katrin and Daniel, who are now about 2 years old, around for a long time.
