11.11. St. Martin's Day

The day geese die

From the perspective of Gut Aiderbichl

(written by Gisela Pschenitschnig)

St. Martin's Day is approaching again. Many geese that live on the farms of Gut Aiderbichl have escaped certain death before St. Martin's Day. They enjoy their freedom, the safe environment, the wonderful wooden houses by the pond near the deer enclosure and, above all, the fact that they will not be eaten on November 11th.

The history of the goose

Even the Greeks kept geese. Back then, the goose was a sacred bird. Geese were not only kept because of their sacredness, but were also stuffed by the Greeks.
For the Romans, geese were also sacred animals and were kept on the Capitol. When the Gauls invaded, the geese screaming loudly drove away the enemy and saved the castle.

Goose Martin stuck in a rake

Martin was discovered and rescued by the fire department near a brewery. One of his wings was stuck in a rake. The wing was injured, so Martin was taken to a vet. Martin was then taken to an animal shelter, which was not equipped for geese.
Martin now lives in the large flock of geese at Gut Aiderbichl in Henndorf. Martin was lucky, and chattered the great song of freedom all day long in chorus with all his fellows.

Goose farms are the last place a goose wants to live

On the goose farms, the animals live in cages where it is absolutely impossible for them to move. Up to four times a day, the animals are fed around 1000 grams of maize porridge, which is equivalent to around seven kilograms of spaghetti.
Towards the end of the fattening period, the fattening geese become quiet - dead quiet. Due to their massive bodies, the geese can no longer move and have difficulty breathing because the thick, swollen liver presses on the respiratory organs. The geese gasp for air through their half-open beaks.

Foie gras is supposedly becoming more and more "out". A fatty liver is an organ that has been deliberately made ill and is not healthy for humans either. More and more consumers are consciously rejecting fattening products and preferring healthy, vegetarian or even vegan cuisine.

Animals are my friends, and I don't eat my friends.

~ G. B. Shaw

On St. Martin's Day, replace roast goose and its products with one or two good bread dumplings with red cabbage.

Simply to think about,
Your Gisela.
