Degu Odin

One of many remained

An animal loving family has their heart set on degus lost. Three years ago, they got 3 degus - Styx, Hermes and Pan - from the animal shelter. The children built from a corner cupboard a Degustallto keep them in a large and varied home. There were different floors, hanging bridges and climbing possibilities.
Unfortunately, Hermes and Pan became ill and died. Styx was not to be left alone, and again the family fetched degus from the shelter. Odin and Loki became Styx's friends, and all seemed well. Loki and Styx died and Odin was left alone.

"We would be very grateful if you could give our little one a home..."

Odin is about four and a half years old and a beauty of a Degu. His fur is gray-brown. He is rather shy and reserved and our Anna said: "Dear Odin, look, we have here still other Degus. Felix, PupiLea and Lena. Get to know each other slowly once, then you will have a lot of fun together...".
Odin is now getting to know his new surroundings. He seeks relax after an exciting day in his sand bath. Then, it gets quiet in the Deguhaus.

The home of degus is Chile

Degus' original home is Chile. These are social group animals, which must not be kept alone under any circumstances. Unlike the guinea pig or hamster, degus are rather unknown pets and are diurnal. They want to be busy and love the perception by humans. Degus need conspecifics to play with, to cuddle, to groom each other and to communicate.

Odin now lives with Lena, Lea, Pupi and Felix in a spacious cage. There are several floors that they can inhabit. In order to give them the chance to move forward, various ramps have been installed. Odin seems to want to show us that he is a real acrobat.
For humans, it can be fun and relaxing to watch the nimble animals. There is cleaning and gnawing on the nutshells and fitness training in the hamster wheel. With numerous beeps, degus tell each other what is going on.

In spring, Odin and his friends will move into a spacious enclosure

Anna beams with degus when she thinks about the joy they will have when it gets warmer and the animals can move into their outdoor enclosure.
Next to the chinchilla enclosure behind the donkey house, the degus will move in. Degus want to dig burrows and tunnels, they need a generous bedding, roots, branches, stones and clay tubes and the like.
For food, the little critters need lots of fresh grass and hay, as well as spicy herbs, fresh carrots and nuts, dried vegetables and seeds. All the goodies that the little degu family will always have at hand.

It is also important that the enclosure is "cat-proof", so everything must be well thought out and safely planned.

Well then - let's hope that the warm spring weather comes soon.
