Degu Odin
One of many remained
An animal-loving family has lost their heart to Degus. Three years ago, people took 3 Degus – Styx, Hermes and Pan – from the shelter. The children built a degusting stable from a corner cupboard, to offer the new friendsa large and varied home. There were different floors, suspension bridges and climbing facilities.
Unfortunately, Hermes and Pan fell ill and died. Styx was not to be left alone, and once again the family went to fetchDegusfrom the shelter. Odin and Loki became friends with Styx, and all seemed well. Loki and Styx died and Odin was left alone.
"We would be very grateful if you could give our little one a home ..."
Odin is approx. four and a half years old and a beauty of a Degu. Its fur is grey-brown. Odin is rather shy and reserved and our Anna said: “Dear Odin, look, we have other Degushere. Felix, Pupi, Lea and Lena. Get to know each other slowly, then you’ll have a lot of fun together…”.
Odin is nowgetting to know his new surroundings. He seeks relaxation after an exciting day in his sand bath. Danafter it gets quiet in the Deguhaus.
The home of the degus is Chile
The original home of the degus is Chile. They are social group animals that must never be kept alone. Unlike guinea pigs or hamsters, degus are rather unknown pets and are active during the day. They want to be kept busy and love human attention. Degus need conspecifics to play with, cuddle, groom each other and communicate.
Odin now lives with Lena, Lea, Pupi and Felix in a spacious cage. There are several floors for the animals to live on. Various ramps have been installed so that they can move forwards. Odin seems to want to show us that he is a real acrobat.
Watching the agile animals can be fun and relaxing for humans. They clean and gnaw on the nutshells and do fitness training in the hamster wheel. The degus tell each other what’s going on with numerous beeps.
In spring, Odin and his friends will move into a spacious enclosure
Anna beams with joy with the degus when she thinks about how happy they will be when it gets warmer and the animals can move into their outdoor enclosure.
The degus will move in next to the chinchilla enclosure behind the donkey house. Degus want to dig burrows and tunnels, they need generous bedding, roots, branches, stones and clay tubes and the like.
For their diet, the little animals need plenty of fresh grass and hay, as well as savoury herbs, fresh carrots and nuts, dried vegetables and seeds. All tasty treats that the little degu family will always have at their disposal.
It is also important that the enclosure is “cat-proof”, so everything must be well thought out and safely planned.
Well then – let’s hope the warm spring weather arrives soon.
