Pekingese Gismo

A Chinese palace guard

From the perspective of Gut Aiderbichl

(written by Gisela Pschenitschnig)

Gismo, together with other animals belonging to a very animal-loving lady, became an Aiderbichler a few years ago.

The lady affectionately calls Gismo, a Pekingese mix, "her problem child". He has not lived with her from the beginning, but was a "foundling" with special preferences. In any case, Gismo wants to be treated with respect, he wants his own separate place to sleep and if you try to touch him with both hands, he turns into a viper and bites without warning.

After Gismo's owner suffered a lung infarction, he and his friends became Aiderbichlers. Immediately after the event, the animal welfare program took effect. Aiderbichler staff collected the animals and the lady was able to devote herself to their recovery. However, she always wanted to know how her protégés were doing.

Gismo's story is very special

From the 17th century, the Pekingese was regarded as a Chinese palace guard until it was introduced to Europe at some point and mutated into a fashionable dog.
The character of the Pekingese is sharp-witted, attentive, faithful, loyal, people-oriented, fearless, brave as a lion, stubborn and charming.
Typical breed characteristics are the head with the flat nose, the large, round, alert and inquisitive eyes, the long floppy ears and the long, bushy tail.

Pekingese and torture breeding - it all began over 50 years ago

Gismo does not fall under the lap dog cliché. He is a good watchdog who always makes a noise when he notices strangers. The Pekingese is a loyal companion, but can be rather shy and reserved towards strangers. His demeanor is often bold and very self-confident and he does not even shy away from larger conspecifics or other animals. Gismo likes donkeys and pigs - no problem at all.

Gismo needs to run around, but due to his short head (brachycephaly) caused by his breeding, he doesn't think much of long walks. His friend Buddy, a Peruvian Hairless Dog, can always motivate him to go for walks in the fresh air.
Before breeders created the flat-nosed Pekingese, the legs, eyes, coat and nose were normal. The various breedings were not without consequences for the dogs. The Pekingese's excessively flat nose leads to breathing problems, the excessively long coat has a negative effect on the field of vision and freedom of movement, and favors various inflammations. Many Pekingese have cartilaginous legs, which can lead to considerable joint problems.

Shock moment - Gismo's eye suddenly fell out during the meal

Gismo's overgrown eyes also gave all the animal keepers a terrible shock a few weeks ago. Gismo was at his food bowl when his eye suddenly fell out without warning and he had to be taken to the vet immediately in terrible pain. Unfortunately, the eye could not be saved and could only be surgically removed.

Stress, pulling on the fur, etc. can cause the incredible event that the Pekingese's oversized eye actually falls out.
Gismo has recovered well from the operation. All the animal keepers are keeping a close eye on brave little Gismo and he thanks them by wagging his tail with great joy

Simply to think and rethink - your purchase supports animal suffering

Gismo is one of many dogs that come from torturous breeding and that many people still prefer to buy. This kind of consumer behavior does not stop the suffering of animals, but of course encourages it.

The consumer determines the direction in which, for example, Pekingese, Pugs, etc. are going. Breeding targets and breeding measures can only be stopped if demand falls drastically

You can't live through a day without it having an impact on the world. And we all have the choice of what kind of impact that should be.

Think and think again, Gisela
