The abandoned "car park cats"
It was one of those hot summer days. The sweltering heat made it difficult to work, but despite everything, it was a well-attended day at Gut Aiderbichl Henndorf. After a long day’s work, our employees took a leisurely stroll to the car park and reflected on the day. Suddenly they thought they heard a desperate “meowing” coming from somewhere.
Sure enough, they found five frightened cats under a car. As they carefully approached, the Aiderbichler staff were left breathless. Desperate, whimpering eyes looked at them, intimidated: a mum cat and her four kittens had been abandoned. It would have been unthinkable if they hadn’t found them.
Practised, sensitive work was now required
At first it was almost impossible to attract the cats. But the kittens quickly realised that there was no danger and with a little patience and playful behaviour, all four babies were safely caught. Mum was a little more hesitant, but she was very hungry, so we finally managed to lure her into the box too.
So the working day wasn’t over after all, because first of all the cats had to be looked after.
Our animal keepers always have a place for abandoned animals
The boxes were opened and the first thing they did in the infirmary was to check the health of the young kittens – two red, one white and one black cat.
The excited mother cat watched the scenario from the corner of the room, very sceptical and frightened. The carers had to be particularly patient with her and slowly build up trust.
At the end of the day, everything will be fine...
However, it didn’t happen so quickly that the cat family felt completely at ease. Even days later, they still radiated uncertainty and fear and there was no sign of any great trust. At some point, the carers noticed that the situation was turning in a new, positive direction and they were beaming with joy with the cat family.
Aiderbichler does not accuse, we try to help and understand ...
But how are animal-loving people supposed to understand when someone else abandons their pet? Maybe they’ve lost their job, maybe their new landlord doesn’t allow pets, maybe they didn’t have the money to neuter their cat? The questions are endless…
In the meantime, we have been able to place all five cats with loving people. According to the new cat owners, every single cat is doing very well and they feel completely at ease and are grateful.
